The Digestive System!

We really enjoyed doing The Digestive System demonstration in class. Well most of us, some of us thought it was a bit too disgusting and didn't want to look at the last part.

Firstly, we put a slice of bread into each sandwich bag (to contain the mess!) and used our hands to tear the bread into small chunks.

Then we used our hands to squish the chucks of bread together.

Mrs Hurst added some of her water to act as saliva. We then had another go at squishing the bread with our hands. All of these steps were to demonstrate the job of the mouth, teeth and tongue in the first stage of the digestive system.

As you can see, we all enjoyed having a go at this. It was fun participating in something hands on, to support the learning that had taken place previously where we had learned about the various stages of the Digestive System.

These are all the resources we used to carry out the demonstration.

Next, we added lemon juice and washing up liquid to act as the stomach acids, enzymes and bile that are part of the next stage of this process.

Then we gathered around for the interesting bit! Here you can see Mrs Hurst transferring the mushy bread mixture into a pair of tights.

This part is simulating the small and large intestine. The water is being absorbed and any waste liquid makes it way out of the body as urine.

Any nutrients are utilised by the body, but any waste solid matter exits the body as poo.
