Performance Poetry Winners!

Well, well, well...We are excited to announce that we were chosen as the winners of the Upper Phase Performance Poetry Competition.

We gathered in the hall for the performances and enjoyed listening to each class from Years 3, 4 and 5 perform their poems.

Each of the poems were taken from this book:

In Year 4 we had the poem Your Epic Self by Kate Wakeling to learn and recite off by heart...

Ocean deep,

quick as a comet,

your epic self is a force beyond.

You can open any lock,

you can scale any cliff,

you can sniff out a lie from a mile off.

I once saw you switch

on every lightbulb in town

with just your smile.

Your ideas are a fistful of gold pieces,

your words are strong as salt.

You can keep a secret quieter that clouds

but when you see a wrong not put right,

oh there’s no sound

mightier than your tiger roar.

And sure,

your epic self doesn’t surface every day.

No one’s does.

But know it’s there,

tucked deep,

ready and waiting.

Sure as an anchor,

bright as the moon,

your epic self is a force beyond.

And our class did a wonderful job. The governors, who were nicknamed 'The Judges' for the occasion, complimented us for our use of intonation, tone and volume when performing the poem. Mrs Hurst couldn't have been prouder of us, as it the performance choices were made by us, with only a little guidance and direction from her.

So we are now the proud owners of this book and are going to enjoy exploring it together in class.  It is an anthology of poems by Joseph Coelho who is the Waterstones Children's Laureate for 2022-2024.
